The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony is an odd, interesting read. Roberto Calasso attempts to create a unified theory of Greek mythology and its meaning. The work isn't completely cohesive - Calasso assumes his readers already know the myths and only tells little snatches of them. When I finished the book, the sections on Sparta (my least favourite) were at the front of my mind. After settling for a few days, the repeating theme of divine children and the tension between uniqueness and duplicity is what is staying with me most forcefully. It is at once a wholly original and fascinating read and I recommend it to those interested in the meaning of myth.
